Jake, whose single mom is out working most of the time, keeps mostly to himself at high school, spending time with his more assertive friend Buddy. After being persuaded to attend a protest against LGBTQ+ students with Buddy, Jake gets into a fight with a member of the gender-sexuality alliance club, getting himself in trouble at school and home. But Jake soon discovers a very personal connection to this issue—his employer, Max, who serves a father figure to him, is in fact trans. Jake rethinks what his values are and finds that he has more in common with members of the LGBTQ+ community than he thought.
